When you introduce too much burst cards that do too much, in a game like LoR, whose base mechanics largely allow some kind of response, you run the risk of burst spells being the default base way to play the game - because fundamentally, nothing else in the game completely disallows interaction. If you have been in the subreddit during foundations, it was actually interesting to see that some experienced CCG players already brought up the fact that the devs have to be careful with the strength and number of burst cards being released, especially in an interactivity focused game. Instead, how about removing Burst speed from most spells, especially those interacting with minions, and replacing them with Fast or Focused in order to enable interactivity again in a game for which it was its most proeminent selling point ?īurst existing as a mechanic is fine - but the power level of burst cards need to be carefully controlled. Back to 2 mana ? One of the best combat tricks in the game. As an example, Twin Blades was nerfed to 3 mana and never saw play again. Now, it's not easy to "nerf" a card by hitting its stats or its cost. What's the point of playing removals when they can be neutralized without effort ? Since then, the state of the game has more and more shifted to "I hope they haven't this or that card to counter my removal", leading to a need of powercreeping removals to balance it (and they're still lagging behind, but again that's not my point). Mostly, all of them at burst speed, leaving absolutely no counterplay. All of them pretty powerful, but their power level is not the point here. Then came Targon, along with Pale Cascade, Sharpsight, Troll Chant, Hush. Some were already pretty strong (hello Twin Blades) but more or less manageable. If you were not there by then, believe it or not, burst (inter)actions were quite scarce. I've been playing the game for around 2 years.
